Top 100 SA Wines – Full Results

The most talked-about competition of the year - results in full!

Possibly the most eagerly-awaited set of results in the SA wine world were launched this evening at a reception at Rodwell House in St James, Cape Town. The Top 100 SA Wines has generated masses of column inches both in print and online, with discussions surrounding the name, the judges, the proposed industry executive, the aims of the competition and a myriad other discussion points.

Well, the wait is over and the results are out. Here are a few facts which may be of interest:

411 wines were entered, 15 were declined (reasons unspecified), 6 were withdrawn, mainly for operational reasons (again unspecified) – total number judged was 390.

222 of the wines submitted were red, 143 were white, 25 were of other styles (port, MCC, dessert).

Of the 25 ‘other styles’ entered, 11 ended up in the Top 100, making this a 44% success rate (hot tip for producers thinking of entering next year perhaps!)

24 of the Top 100 retail for less than R100.

14 of the Top 100 (the biggest category) are Chenin Blanc – a shot in the arm for those who believe it is our best vinous asset.

There are no Pinot Noirs in the Top 100.

Top performers with five entries each are Cederberg and Saronsberg followed by Simonsig with four entries.

Particularly interesting entrants (ie newer wineries, wineries not often featured in competitions etc) into the fine wine arena include Oldenburg (3 entries), Bosman Family Vineyards (2 entries), MAN Vintners Tormentoso (2 entries), Zorgvliet (2 entries), Aaldering, Allee Bleue, Hawksmoor at Matjieskuil, Sumaridge, Vondeling, Vuurberg (1 entry apiece).

All the winemakers who took part as judges or who are part of the industry executive have got wines listed in the Top 100. The introductory section assures us that ‘commercial interests are distinct and separate from the judging process and from the judges themselves’ and I spoke to Tim Atkin and several other judges, all of whom were adamant that they have no idea what wines they tasted, and that no winemaker judged their own wine.

23 bottles rejected because of cork taint, 7 were oxidised and a further 10 others suffered from other faults.

3,600 water biscuits were consumed over the four days of judging!

Each wine is listed with a short comment from the judges which is nice, but nicer still would have been to know which judge made that comment. There is a lot of information given on each wine including details of vinification etc which are often omitted from other guides due to lack of space. The rest of the book is devoted to industry information, maps, a winetasting glossary and tips on buying and storing wine

So there you go – a few thoughts to chew on. I suppose you could say there are notable omissions from what perhaps would generally be termed ‘South Africa’s best’ - whether because they didn’t enter or because they didn’t get through, we shall never know. Equally so, there are wines included which will cause surprise/curiosity and frankly, some disbelief.

But isn’t this what happens with all competition results – when the people we expect to win, do win - we say ‘same-old, same-old, yawn’ and when newcomers triumph and usual suspects are ignored, we react with outrage and cast aspersions on the knowledge and capabilities of the judges involved. You’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t, and I don’t see why this competition will be any different from any others.

So back to the name – is this a list that we can feel proud of, one which truly represents the very best of South African wine? I would say yes, that these are all excellent examples of their particular style and I am sure that anyone drinking any of them would agree. Are there others as good or better? For sure – but they’re not on this list, these ones are.

Well done to the people who’ve paid their money, chosen to enter this competition and won – I hope you feel the returns are worth it. For those who didn’t (and the book acknowledges that the most popular reason given for not entering was ‘wanting to see how the first year goes before committing’ – now you know), I daresay that if you feel you fit in that list, you’ll be filling in your forms for next year. And at the end of the day, that’s the only measure of success anyone is going to pay attention to at all.

Eat Out interviews Elmari Swart

Elmari Swart is the co-founder of Cheviot Publishing, a boutique-publishing house. Before she dabbled in the printed word, Elmari made wine in France, Australia and South Africa. She now indulges her passion by producing 1 200 bottles of fine wine annually in her garagiste winery. Elmari has recently published The Essential Guide to South African Wines: Terroir & Travel. And, one lucky Eat Out reader can win a copy, plus some wine.

Where do you like to eat out?
I spend a lot of time out in the winelands researching and hosting clients at wineries during the day, so at night I prefer to frequent restaurants closer to town. Some favourites are Giovanni’s, The Cod Father, Five Flies, HQ, La Petite Fermé and Le Quartier Français.

Do you choose a restaurant for its wine list?
I choose restaurants based on the overall experience. If a restaurant offers an exceptional wine list, I am certainly tempted to visit. But when I am entertaining guests and need to present specific wines to them, I select a venue based on the food offering and arrange wines with the sommelier before our visit. I find most restaurants very accommodating to these requests, and in return I always make sure that the winemaker or tour guide meets the owner or maître d’ so that they can exchange details.

How will this book help diners in the winelands?
For me, quality of life is all about accessibility, simplicity and enjoyment. The guide provides diners with these essential food, wine and travel connections. The guide also helps you to select a wine ‘pocket’, jump in the car, and do a day-trip to visit some of the unique wineries in that area. Detailed relief maps provide GPS co-ordinates and are backed up by downloadable waypoints and routes on our website.
Every pocket takes you on a journey, where you discover the terroir, viticulture, wine-making techniques and flagship wines of some of the country’s premium producers. The pocket also provides selected restaurants, accommodation, local delicacies and festivals.

A selected group of highly succesful European ePubs, in conjunction with Frankfurter Buchmesse, presented seminars and workshops, assisting local publishers in exploring this fast-paced genre. From iPad and smartphone downloads to interactive books and personalized content, we discussed it all.

With the support of the Goethe Institut South Africa , CTBF invited more than 15 publishers from other African countries to attend the fair and showcase the best African Books. This year also saw the inaugural CTBF Professional Day, with a professional programme for all exhibitors and trade visitors. Matchmaking sessions, rights-and business-lounges provided exhibitors, buyers and the trade with hours of concentrated book-talk.

A highlight at the show was a discussion and wine tasting, presented by Elmari Swart. We looked at the influence of terroir on Sauvignon Blanc. Cheviot would like to thank Onderkloof and Gabriëlskloof for sponsoring the wines, and the CTICC and CTBF for inviting us to present the tasting.

Le Cordon Bleu Awards 2010

The Le Cordon Bleu Awards provides global recognition to the very best in the international food and drink publishing and broadcasting industries.

The foodie equivalent of the movie Oscars, the 2010 Le Cordon Bleu Awards acknowledges the work of food and drink professionals. Entries were received from all over the globe, including USA, New Zealand, France, Australia, Spain, Cambodia, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and South Africa. The more than 700 entries received were judged by an international panel of 60 jurors.

South Africa performed exceptionally well, with Cheviot Publishing’s Essential Guide to SA Wines – terroir & travel short-listed for the Best Drinks Book. Publisher Elmari Swart commented: “I am overjoyed with the short-listing of our title. It is an honour for us to be in the company of esteemed international authors, photographers and chefs. And we send our heartfelt congratulations to Andrew Jefford, who won the Ladle for "Best Drinks Book”.

In addition to Le Cordon Bleu Gold ladles, two distinguished food and drink industry individuals were honoured for their outstanding achievements. British chef, restaurateur, TV presenter and writer Jamie Oliver was inducted into the International Hall of Fame, while Australia’s Maggie Beer was the national inductee.

Ian Parmenter, Jury Chairman, said “the standard of entries in this year’s competition was extraordinarily high and the international judges were faced with an enormous task. However, they were consistent in their agreement on the winners.” Mr. Andre Cointreau, President, Le Cordon Bleu said: “I am very proud to once again be involved in the Awards and its association with winners of such high calibre and international standing. Bravo and congratulations to all of the very deserving award recipients”.

The second annual FM Wine Business Awards revealed astonishing depth in the wider South African wine industry. The award celebrates exceptional performance in terms of best business practice, innovation and leadership.

The Young Achiever award went to Elmari Swart for her work in Cheviot Publishing! The judges found that not only are the wine related books published by Cheviot based on in-depth research, but also provides unique insights into the subject matter. The judges noted the tangible impact on consumers’ understanding of terroir. In addition, the branching into custom-publishing and multi-media clinched the award for Cheviot. Described by the judges as “the perfect candidate for the award, Elmari is indeed the rising star with ambition, drive and demonstrable achievements under her belt that this category embodies”.

Awards convenors John Woodward (Frogitt & Vonkel Private Wine Merchants & founder Jo’burg Wine Show) and Delarey Brugman (entrepreneur, wine industry investor & owner Alluvia Wine Estate) were unanimous about achieving their goal. “The rationale behind the awards was to shift the industry’s focus to the contributions of the role players throughout the value chain” mentions Woodward. Supported by South Africa's leading business publication, the Financial Mail, participants and award-winners will enjoy the recognition of a Financial Mail Special Report supplement on the Awards.

Paris Food and Wine Book Fair

The city of Paris recently played host to inaugural Paris Food and Wine Book Fair 2010, from 12 – 15 February 2010 at new cultural exhibition centre of Le Cent Quarte.

Considered a culinary headquarters, Paris proved the perfect venue to bring together the best in the food and wine publishing industry.

More than 100 exhibitors showed their various titles, with about 55% of French origin and 45% foreign exhibitors. Most of the large French culinary publishers were present (Marabout, Hachette Pratique, Le Chêne, Larousse, First, Flammarion, Alain Ducasse Publishing to mention a few) alongside several big international publishers, distributors and printers. It was four very busy days with more than 3100 trade visitors and hundreds of interested members of the public attending the event.

Fortunately it was not all work! The long hours of serious business negotiations on distribution and international rights were balanced by loads of entertainment. Celebrity chefs presented more than 50 cooking demonstrations in a French and an International kitchen, giving visitors an interactive cooking experience with a “taste of their culture”.

The wine and spirit tasting centre was tremendously popular, hosting more than 40 tastings over the 4 days. Products from a range of diverse countries were presented: France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, USA, Canada and China. Ninety per cent of the tastings promoted a corresponding book, with the author and/or publisher discussing the title; while the balance of tastings focussed on regional products.

Cheviot Publishing is very excited about the new business connections made at the fair. It was truly a very elegant and joyful event, and indeed great for business. We look forward to reporting on our new sales partners!

SOUTH AFRICA WINS IN PARIS!

On Thursday 11th February 2010, the theatre of Le Cent Quarte, Paris was transformed to a glittering celebration in honour of Food and Wine books. The international publishing industry, authors, photographers and members of the media from around the world joined the Cointreau family in Paris to pay tribute of this year’s guests of honour: The finalists of the 2009 Gourmand competition.

Publisher Elmari Swart joined the winning ranks again this year with Cheviot Publishing’s latest title, The Essential Guide to South African Wines (by E Swart & I Smit). The title was voted as one of the two WORLD's BEST BOOKS in the category “Wine Atlas or Tourism Guide in the World”. Said Swart: “It is a huge honour to be counted amongst the best wine books in the world! I am delighted to fly the flag for South Africa at the Gourmand World Gala.” Elmari also presented a wine tasting to the visitors of the Paris Book Fair to highlight key components of South African terroir.

The gala was a highlight on the culinary calendar with visitors travelling from far and wide to attend. While the European countries along with the Americas dominated the entry numbers (60%+), the East as well as Africa saw a significant increase in finalist numbers. The winning titles and a wide selection of culinary and wine books will be exhibited this year at the Cape Town Book Fair (30 July – 3 August 2010), in a special exhibition of food and wine books from South Africa, and other countries of the African Continent.

What makes a good wine writer?

We look at three principles that make for good wine journalism, expresses certain reservations regarding Robert Parker, and ask whether many oversees wine writer's are out of touch with South African wines?

A recent article on elitism in South African wine writing got me thinking. Does elitism in wine journalism constitute a fault? And what makes for good wine writing? On the subject of elitism, British wine icons Hugh Johnson and Michael Broadbent have built their reputations on tasting many of the world's greatest wines. But no-one can accuse them of elitism. They are simply doing their job. Hugh Johnson's bestselling Pocket Wine Book must by necessity review the most valued wines but it does include many budget ranges when applicable.

Nedbank CapeTalk Small Business Awards 2009

November 2009 saw the second 567 CapeTalk / Nedbank Small Business Awards hosted in Cape Town. This award seeks to recognise outstanding customer service, that personal touch synonymous with a passionate entrepreneur who is actively involved in his or her own business.
In a widely advertised radio campaign, happy customers were asked to nominate their favourite small business, motivating their choice with a letter. Several hundred nominations were received and 28 finalists were selected.

Cheviot Publishing was nominated by Prof Piet Goussard and, both he and publisher Elmari Swart interviewed on the Jon Maytham Show on 9 November 2009. In an emotive letter, Prof Goussard testified to the meticulous attention and “virtually unsurpassable professionalism and skill” of the Cheviot team, who produced and published his books Grape Cultivars for Wine production in South Africa and Druifkultivars vir wynbereiding in Suid-Afrika. Thank you Prof!!

Essential Guide 2009 is launched

On 12 November 2009 we experienced one of those magical moments in publishing: the launch of a new title.

More than 16o distinguished guests from the wine industry, the media and the publishing world assembled at Exclusive Books, V&A Waterfront to be a part of this glittering event. Guests enjoyed an extensive selection of SA's terroir wines, alongside mouth-watering canapés and decadent Lindt chocolate.
MC Jaap Scholten had the crowd in stitches with his witty comments, while publisher Elmari Swart awed guests with a summary of the many hours spent editing, proofing and designing. (Research: 19 months, writing: 7 months, editing: 3 weeks, proofreading: 4.5 weeks, design and layout: 2 months, pre-press and print ready: 2 months.) Little wonder that the production team needed a glass (or 2) of great local wines!!

The highlight of the event was a lucky draw with prizes including terroir wines, a Riedel decanter, meal vouchers and the big prize: a weekend-stay in Tulbagh with meals, accommodation and wine tasting all included. In order to keep the auditors happy, we asked little Mia Johns (aged 4) to do the draw.

The Cheviot team is enjoying the pressure of deadlines, collating all the information, adding final touches to the text, updating the GPS maps and polishing wine bottles for the studio photography.
